What To Do If You Think You're Being Scammed

  1. 1

    Stop and breathe.

Scammers want you to panic. It's okay to take a minute.

  2. 2

Don't pay, click, or share information.

Especially passwords, codes, gift cards, or your Medicare number.

  3. 3

Hang up or close the message.

It is not rude to hang up. You can always call back.

  4. 4

    Call someone you trust.

A family member, friend, or your bank's number on the back of your card.

  5. 5

    Report it.

    Visit ReportFraud.ftc.gov or call 1-877-382-4357.

Set a family safe word

Agree on a word only your family knows. Use it to verify emergency calls.

Add trusted contacts on bank accounts

Most banks let you list a person they can call if something looks off.

Freeze your credit

It's free and stops scammers from opening new accounts in your name.

Talk about scams together

Share alerts at family dinners. Scammers count on silence.
